Mission Statement
The mission of Family Bridges, Inc. is to empower the most vulnerable
members of the Asian community, especially the elderly, immigrants,
and those with limited- English language skills, by providing them with
the assistance necessary to lead self-sufficient, independent lives.
Overview
Family Bridges, Inc. is a nonprofit, multi-service agency providing a
variety of programs for the community. These programs include the Hong
Fook Adult Day Health Care Centers, Hong Lok Senior Center, the Friendly
Visitors program, the Social Services program, Registry Services, and
the Diabetes Education Center. Family Bridges has been serving the community
since 1968. Our services are targeted to serve immigrants who have limited
English proficiency. Our diverse staff members speak Cantonese, Mandarin,
Korean, and Vietnamese as well as English. All our services are available
for people of all races and ethnicities who are moderate-to low-income
and residing in Alameda County and Contra Costa County.
History
In the late 1960’s, changes in U.S. immigration laws and stifling political
conditions in China encouraged a new wave of immigration to the United
States from China. Many of these immigrants arrived in Oakland
without the basic survival skills needed to find housing, employment,
and health care. To assist these immigrants, a group of volunteers founded
the Oakland Chinese Community Council, Inc. (later to be known as Family
Bridges, Inc.) in 1968 as a volunteer-operated, Chinese-language information
and referral service. Our name change in 2000 to Family Bridges,
Inc. reflects how we have embraced the diversification of our services,
to encompass building bridges for all families and all races beyond the
Chinese community.
Although Family Bridges has now grown to include five major programs,
we remain true to our initial mission of serving vulnerable Asian immigrants
with particular emphasis on recent immigrants, the elderly, and immigrants
with limited English.
Since its inception, Family Bridges has been at the forefront of providing
services for monolingual and limited-English proficient (LEP) Asian immigrants.
Our bilingual services include: information and referral, language and
citizenship assistance, a drop-in senior center, two adult day health
care centers for frail elders and disabled adults, homecare registry
services and diabetes education management. We serve approximately
15,000 unduplicated clients a year. Ninety-five percent of our clients
are Asian LEPs. Family Bridges programs are supported by funding from
private foundations, government, and fundraising efforts.
