Participant Stories

I was referred to Family Bridges’ Diabetes Education Center program by my doctor. I have been to several nutritional classes over the years but by far Family Bridges’ program is the best. The program is very, very thorough.
The instructor takes you slowly through everything from step 1- What is Diabetes, What happens when you don’t have enough insulin. We went into diet and exercise, we went into every phase of it. I’ve been a diabetic a long time, maybe 15 years, but it was like I had never been a diabetic. The program encouraged and supported me in making small but important changes.
For example, the instructor suggested that I change my (glucose) meter to one that was easier and more comfortable to use. She got on the phone and did all the background work for me with my insurance company to get it covered. I now take my meter everywhere with me and read my blood sugar level often, that’s something that I learned from class.
Another example was the medication I had been taking wasn’t keeping my sugar levels down. The instructor suggested trying a different medication and went to the trouble of looking to see where she could get some donated to me and got me a three months supply. It was a lot more effective and my insurance now covers this medication.
As a result of taking part in the program, my insulin dosage levels have really come down and now I’ve learned how to adjust it for myself, by calculating how many carbohydrates I’ve eaten. I have more overall control and it feels good not having to wake up in the morning and see my blood sugar at 220. I feel good inside when I read those levels and they’re where they’re supposed to be. It gives me more confidence in myself.
